The thing to do is just to try some of MOTU's plugins next time you're messing around and see if they do anything you like. And no DAW is without its chorus of critics. I've heard a lot of complaining about some of the lesser plugins that come with Logic. That said, I don't think any DAW is without its dogs. I hear a lot of good things about MOTU plugins these days, depending on who is talking. But that doesn't mean the whole set is lacking. For example, people used to complain about the Trigger plugin, and I think they finally did find a bug in it and fixed it. I think the truth is probably closer to there being a few dogs from 15 years ago which haven't been updated, or were only recently updated. There are other, newer plugins that I haven't really explored yet, but people rave about them in the reviews of DP, so there must be something good happening in DP's plugin set. Sometimes I still pull out the MOTU Dynamics plugin for its side-chaining, or the EQ for its simplicity and low RAM footprint. I've got a lot more specialized plugins that do things that MOTU's don't. I don't use them much anymore, but not because they aren't any good. What I found then was that I liked fooling around with the Waves plugins more, because they gave us more cool controls than MOTU, but I suspect the results were pretty much the same for comparable plugins. They were my first plugin set, and I did a lot of highly-regarded music with them until I was able to afford Waves Platinum Bundle. Almost all the criticism I've seen or heard has been they knee-jerk stuff that goes along with "Pro Tools is the best," or "All the guys in pop music today use Logic." In fact, I've been seeing a lot of GOOD stuff about DP and its plugins recently in the industry press.Īs far as just using them to accomplish a purpose, I haven't found them lacking. I mean, I've never read reviews where someone hooked them up to oscilloscopes and meters and measured their precision and accuracy as compared with other plugins. I really don't know how they are regarded by people in the know. I think it's important to ignore all the outdated ones that were never meant to be incredible, most of those have been replaced anyway. Ever since the Masterworks line came out, they've really stepped up their game. I think one of the things we forget is that MOTU started out only doing rudimentary plugins, and now their slowly replacing them with great ones. but they're expanding at a very reasonable rate these days. But they do have quite a few holes: no great digital reverb, no multiband limiter, not a lot to choose from in their compressors, etc. I think their plugs are extremely high caliber. Their amp sims and pedals are better than Guitar Rig, IMO, though I don't get much of a chance to use them. Their new dynamic EQ certainly gives Waves' C6 a fight, the MWLeveler is an amazing piece of work, and their MW EQ is extemely usable. MOTU doesn't make 1/10th of the plugs a major plugin developer does, though, so they can't compete on all fronts. I think they give Waves and similar competitive plugs a run for their money in each case. On the contrary, I believe MOTUs plugins to be extrordinary for bundled effects, in fact, I think they're extrordinary, period.

Except for the MasterWorks bundle, every other plugin only comes in MAS format which can't be used with any othe le DAW. I know nothing about MOTU's plugin development strategy but it would be nice if they were more consistent across the lineup.

I'm still getting the Fab Filter EQ but the MW eq is gonna stay in my chain somewhere. Good feature to have.Īlso the MW eq and ProVerb are really good plugins. The lo pass type filter on the CLA-2A is kinda the killer feature for me since I would use it on bass a lot. Normally it can only be bought in the bundle for $400 or $500. At $59 for the CLA-2A, that's a good price. I wanted the Bass and Vocals but I think I can basically recreate that chain myself (not quite but close enough).Īny other thoughts on the Leveler? I'm going to test it more before the Waves sale ends. I bought the Unplugged and Effects plugins on the last sale. The CLA Bass was Intereting but not surprising (he mentions using MaxxBass and LoAir). EQs, and other Waves processors he used to design each plugin.

But you can turn off that "warm up" nonsense on the MW Leveler.Ībout the CLA Bundle, for those that use it, have you seen that PDF that Waves released with CLA's handwritten signal flow for each plugin?
